Bakersfield, Dora girls win district openers
The Bakersfield Lady Lions beat intra-county rival Gainesville Monday night in the class 2 district 10 tournament at Mansfield 59-53 to advance to the second round of the tournament where they will face Seymour at 6 p.m Wednesday, weather permitting.
Bakersfield used a 17-3 second-quarter to grab an early lead and then held off a comeback by the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth quarter to get the win.
Bakersfield's Kody Smith and Gainesville's Madison Strong were in a shootout, with Smith netting 32 points while Strong scored 33.
Betsy Minkler chipped in 12 points for the Lady Lions, while Scout Jeckstadt had 8 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.
The freshman-heavy Gainesville squad finished the year with a 14-11 record, going 5-1 in conference play.
Bakersfield's girls also won their fifth straight White River Conference championship on Valentine's Day, beating Koshkonong 57-48.
Betsy Minkler was leading scorer for Bakersfield with 23 points, followed by Valerie Amerlan with 14 and Larissa Britt with 9.
<strong>Dora girls win</strong>
The Dora Lady Falcons routed the Fordland Lady Eagles 58-27 Monday night in the opening round of districts. The second-seeded Lady Falcons improve to 21-6 on the year and will face Sparta at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, weather permitting.
Individual statistics were not provided by Dora coaches.
<strong>Lutie teams fall</strong>
The Lutie boys and girls teams both faced Exeter in the class 1 district 4 tournament Saturday at Sparta.
Lutie's boys lost to Exeter 57-44. The Indians finish their season with a 9-15 record.
The Lady Indians also lost to Exeter 38-24. The Lady Indians were 1-12 on the year.
<strong>Boys' class 2 district 10</strong>
Gainesville, Bakersfield and Dora boys are all scheduled to play Tuesday evening in the class 2 district 10 tournament at Mansfield.
