Hello from our home to yours. It was a fun and exciting week at the Gainesville Health Care Center. Last week, we celebrated National Nursing Home Week with a different theme packed full of joy each day. Monday was our western day. Employees dressed up in their best western attire. We started off with some games like horse roping and a water gun shootout. For lunch, we had a big barbecue for residents, staff and family. After lunch, we had a photo booth with props. We took some silly pictures and had a blast.
Tuesday’s theme was 50s day. Poodle skirts were worn. We gathered in the dining room for our malt shop. We had five different ice cream floats to choose from – root beer, orange dreamsicles, purple cows, snow white and coke floats. In the afternoon, we transformed the dining room into a drive-in movie. We blackened all the windows so no light would show and put up a screen with a projector. We watched Grease and ate popcorn.
Wednesday was 80s day. To kick it off, we turned on some 80s tunes and did the Pepsi challenge where everyone had to tell me if they could tell the difference between Pepsi and Coke just by taking a drink. Mostly everyone got it right. After lunch, we gathered in the dining room for another big-screen movie – E.T. – with snack chips served.
Thursday was 70s day. We wore our best hippie gear and had a disco party. Homemade pizza from a box was served. We listened to music and danced. It was a groovy party, for sure.
Friday was our Great Gatsby party celebrating the 1920s. We wore flapper dresses, zoot suits, pearls and feathers in our hair. We turned our fireplace room into a speakeasy by turning on little lamps, putting lights around the window and turning the lights out to keep it somewhat dark in there. Decorations were put up, and it looked amazing. We served all kinds of different drinks. Music played softly in the background while we visited with one another. It was definitely the highlight of the week. After lunch, we had a photo shoot with props. We ate red velvet cake and popsicles.
Overall, the week was punch-packed with joy and laughter. We all can’t wait to see what next year brings.
