Lady Bulldogs score wins over Alton, Norwood, Bakersfield

The Gainesville Lady Bulldogs softball team moved their record to 6-2 with wins over the Alton Comets and Norwood Pirates last week and Bakersfield this week.

The Lady Bulldogs pulled out a 12-2 home-field victory over Alton on Tuesday, Sept. 7. “I have to give all my girls credit for this one,” said GHS coach Joe Walrath. “They all hit the ball and took advantage of some mistakes made by Alton. I saw another great defensive play by Deb Winrod. She short-hopped a ball in centerfield and got the force-out at home plate on a runner who was tagging up from third. She never ceases to amaze me. Sailor Anderson pitched a good game to seal the win for us.”

The Lady Bulldogs hosted the Norwood Lady Pirates Thursday, Sept. 9. “This team beat up on us pretty good last fall, and the girls were going to make sure that didn’t happen at our home ballpark like last year,” said Walrath. “We were up on them 4-0 but made a couple of dumb plays, and it was 4-4 going into the bottom of the sixth. We were able to work the bases loaded after Jessee Latham was hit by a pitch; then it was Hallee Donley time. She hit a shot in the gap that cleared the bases. Sailor tried to scare me in the top of the seventh but pitched her way out of it without allowing a run, giving us a 7-4 win.”

The JV team went 1-0 on the week by beating Norwood. “Once again Kaitlyn Morgan does what she does, pitches great games,” said Walrath. “Emma McGinnis used that inside-out swing to help us score runs. Great job, ladies!”

The Lady Bulldogs welcomed the Bakersfield Lady Lions to town on Monday, Sept. 13, and won 4-3 in extra innings. They traveled to Seymour Tuesday to take on the Tigers. Results of the Seymour game were unavailable at press time.
