Lions, Lady Lions get wins

Bakersfield teams started the year off with wins over Cotter, Ark., and the Lady Lions split the next two games with Salem, Ark., and Mansfield.

Coach Doyne Byrd's girls used their tough full-court press defense to help get a season-opening win over the Lady Warriors of Cotter 60-22 on Nov. 20.

Betsy Minkler led Bakersfield in scoring with 15 points, followed by Kristin Marsh with 12.

Meanwhile, the boys' team pulled off a win over Cotter, too, 57-53. The Lions were led by Kraig Foster with 13 points.

Two days later the Lady Lions had a miserable second quarter, being outscored by Salem, Ark., 17-5 in the second en route to a 54-46 loss at the hands of the Lady Greyhounds.

Betsy Minkler led the Lady Lions' effort with 20 points, followed by Larissa Britt with 10. Valerie Amerlan chipped in 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for Bakersfield.

The Lady Lions had a few days' rest before hosting Mansfield on Nov. 26 in a battle of the Lady Lions.

Bakersfield used its full-court press against Mansfield to create several turnovers in the second quarter and outscore their opponents 20-2 on their way to a 55-37 win. Betsy Minkler led Bakersfield again, this time with 27 points.

Bakersfield also won a three-quarter JV game, 33-16. Destiny Johnson led Bakersfield in scoring with 10 points in that contest.

The Bakersfield boys' team opened up competition in the Koshkonong tournament Monday night against Gainesville's JV squad. Information from that game was not made available by coaches.

Up next for the Lady Lions will be a road trip to Alton on Dec. 3.
