CADET MORRISON Even though he didn’t have a high school diploma, Winsor “Verd” Morrison was accepted into the Army Air Corps (today’s Air Force) after scoring 92 on the entrance exam a recruiter predicted he couldn’t pass. He was assigned to bombardier training and finished out the war in Hawaii, narrowly missing orders to ship out to Japan. “While we were there on island defense, they dropped the A-bomb in Japan,” he said.
