Replica of Vietnam Memorial coming to Ava

The Douglas County Veterans Memorial Association in Ava has been selected by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund in Washington, D.C., to host a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Sept. 20-23 at the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association facility on Highway 5 north of Ava. The memorial will be open 24/7 during its stay there and will include digital displays of photos of service members whose names are on The Wall, letters and memorabilia representing items left at The Wall in D.C.; a map of Vietnam and a chronological overview of the Vietnam War. Ava is the only location in Missouri that will host the wall in 2018. The traveling memorial, transported in a convoy of trucks like the one shown above, will arrive via Highway 5 with a proposed traveling route that includes Lebanon, Grove Springs, Hartville and Mansfield. Dr. Larry Morrison, events coordinator for the Douglas County Veterans Memorial Association, said his group expects more than 500 motorcycle riders and Patriot Guard riders to escort the memorial wall into Ava. Motorcycle riders interested in participating are encouraged to contact Morrison at dcvets@centurytel.net or 417-849-1875 for more information.
