Gainesville school board hosts meeting to discuss revised levy-increase proposal

The Gainesville R-V School Board will hold a special meeting at 7:30 a.m. Monday in the high school library that will serve as an informal discussion session on Proposition Gainesville Schools. The meeting is open to the public, and coffee and donuts will be served.

Everyone is welcome to attend, and all will be given the opportunity to ask questions and listen to a discussion about the issue that will be on the Nov. 6 general election ballot, a spokesperson said.

The board voted last month to go back to the voters after its initial proposal, Proposition Gainesville Bulldogs, failed by 14 votes in the August primary election. The new proposal will ask for the same increase of 75 cents per $100 assessed valuation of real estate and personal property, but this time the board is proposing the increase be phased in over a three-year period, beginning in 2019. The revised request also includes a sunset provision that stipulates that the increased operating levy will expire in 25 years.

Dr. Jeff Hyatt, superintendent, says this is the first informational session for this proposal. The board plans to schedule more between now and November.
