Lutie students get fire safety lesson

Theodosia Area Volunteer Fire Department chief Jim Jeffery, right, and fire captain / EMR Tracy Meal (not shown), demonstrated “fire safety” and led a “meet a firefighter” presentation recently for summer school students at Lutie Elementary. The fire safety talks stressed the importance of smoke detectors and having an escape plan and an agreed-upon meeting place outside the home in case of fire. The children were told to never hide if there’s a fire, acknowledging that many fires are started by children playing with lighters or matches, and they hide for fear of getting in trouble when a fire breaks out. Meal, who handles public relations for TAVFD, said Jeffery “was a good sport getting dressed numerous times” in different kinds of gear and equipment to show the kids how firefighters may look in emergency situations. The students also were taught to “get low and go” to get under smoke and to “stop, drop and roll” if their clothing ever catches fire.
