Brixey woman, 34, dies in car crash

A Brixey woman, the mother of four children, was one of two fatalities in a single-vehicle crash that occurred Monday afternoon on Highway 5 north of Ava.

Rebecca Mahan Brandon, 34, and Owen R. Dobbs, 25, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Douglas County Coroner Rick Miller at 2:04 p.m.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol online crash report, the accident occurred 5 miles north of Ava at 1:30 p.m. Monday when the 2001 Toyota Solara driven by Dobbs, of Ava, tried to pass two vehicles and traveled off the left side of the roadway, became airborne and struck a tree.

Brandon was a passenger in the vehicle. Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt, according to the report. The vehicle, which was totaled, was towed from the scene.

Although the crash report lists Brandon as having an Ava address, her obituary shows a Brixey address and says she is survived by four children. She is a 2004 graduate of Gainesville High School.

The crash was investigated by MSHP Cpl. D.J. Johnson, who noted that this is MSHP Troop G’s 21st and 22nd fatalities for 2020 compared with 14 for 2019.

Johnson was assisted by MSgt. B.C. Gruben, Sgt. S.R. Richardson, Sgt. L. S. Elliot, Cpl. N. J. Britt, the Ava Rural Fire Department and Ava Ambulance.
