DOW and Piland camps are canceled this summer

Two longtime camps for area youths have been canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The annual weeklong DOW Camp, for youth in Douglas, Ozark and Wright counties, has been canceled this summer because Hammond Mill Camp, the site of DOW Camp and other events, has halted all activities for the 2020 season, DOW Camp volunteer Karla Smith said recently. 

“We normally have 125 kids, counting counselors,” said Smith. “It is just a wonderful place….So many kids have this week to just be kids.

“I hope we never have another year without it.”

In a post on her Facebook page, Smith is hosting a fundraiser for Hammond Mill Camp. Having to cancel all activities for the season “has caused great financial strain for the camp,” she posted. “This place holds such a dear place in my heart. I have seen kids and adults alike fall in love with this place, bugs and all. I have seen year after year what a difference we can make in one week to a kiddo who is able to attend camp. Please help us keep this wonderful place around for many years to come.”

In April, officials with Piland Youth Camp, sponsored by the Missouri Association of General Baptists, announced the cancellation of its 2020 season. Director Anita Donley said the camp plans to be back in session in  summer 2021.

The camp is 100 percent supported by donations and is free for children to attend. Dates for the 2021 camp will be announced at a later date.
