Gainesville Lady Bulldogs take third at Sparta tournament; Shayla Wages scores 1,000th point
The Gainesville Lady Bulldogs brought home third place at the Sparta Invitational Tournament held last week.
Bulldog fans had an exciting game to watch when the number 4 seed Gainesville girls took on number 5 Bradleyville Thursday, Jan. 7, and squeaked by with a 57-54 win.
Shayla Wages led with 22 points, followed by Hallee Donley with 17, and Elizabeth Kinworthy and Erin McKinzie with 8 each. Debra Winrod led in rebounds with 6. Wages led in assists with 4 and steals with 6.
The Lady Bulldogs returned on Friday to take on first seed tournament host Sparta, which now holds a 10-1 record. The Lady Trojans took a 69-17 win, holding all Gainesville scorers to single digits.
Players scoring for Gainesville were Wages 7, Donley 4, McKinzie, Laney Suter and Emory Warden 2 each.
Saturday's third place game was a thriller right down to the final buzzer when Hallee Donley's post shot sealed a 41-40 victory for the Lady Bulldogs.
Wages, who scored her 1000th point during the tournament, led the scoring with 20 points, followed by Kinworthy with 10. Debra Winrd led in rebounds with 9, followed by Kinworthy 7.
"The Sparta tournament was a good test for us," said coach Lance West. "We played three good competitive teams. We still have about 12 games left on the season, but I am pleased with the team's progress so far."
Gainesville's varsity record moves to 8-6 on the year and Gainesville's JV record is 1-2 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs are back in action on Thursday at home against Dora.
