New glass crusher at recycling center

A new glass crusher has arrived and is now being used at the Ozark County Recycling Center near Gainesville. The machine, purchased with a $15,000 grant from the South Central Solid Waste District, replaced an older machine that had become difficult to find parts for. The new 3-horsepower crusher was delivered to the facility by Compactors Inc. of Hilton Head, South Carolina. It will make finer particles of glass, which can be used for a wider range of applications. Eastern District Commissioner Gary Collins, pictured right, said he enjoys writing grants for the recycling center. “We’ve gotten grants for everything from paying wages to getting two balers and a Bobcat. We’ve used it to build new fence and lots more things,” Collins said. “I think the recycling center is a big asset to our community. It really helps keep the county cleaned up.” Recycling center supervisor Eric Lee, left, said people from as far away as Ava and Mountain Home, Arkansas, bring glass to the Ozark County Recycling Center because it is one of only a few in the area that still accepts glass. The facility was first opened in 1989 and has grown ever since, Collins said. The Ozark County Recycling Center, on County Road 502, is open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It accepts plastic marked with numbers 1 or 2, glass, tin and aluminum cans, paper (except for “slick” paper such as junk mail and magazines), cardboard, used motor oil and all metals, including appliances. Recycling is free; household trash can also be disposed of for $2 a bag.
