Snowy Sunday creates wintery wonderland across Ozark County

Jax Headrick, 8, son of Tyler and Mandy Headrick, enjoyed making and throwing snowballs Sunday afternoon. His mom snapped this photo just as one of Jax’s snowballs hit the window. “I was just trying to take a sweet picture of Jax in the snow through the glass door,” Mandy said. “Instead, I get a snowball to the glass.”

Addie Donley, 3-year-old daughter of John and Sarah Beth Donley, spent most of her Sunday afternoon outside on the family’s sled.

Delilah Dreckman, 2-year-old daughter of Drew and Jessi Dreckman, loved letting the snowflakes fall onto her face.

Emmy Burks, 3, made this snowman and also a snow cat Sunday. Emmy is the daughter of Dylan and Lydia Burks of Theodosia.

Wyatt and Kiya Grisham of Pontiac hold their 4-month-old son Wylee during his first snow adventure.

Karson Hubbard, 15, decided to freeze these snowballs for later use.

Loyd Hambelton, 4, son of Michael Hambelton and Veronica Garcia, was proud of this mini-snowman he created Sunday.

Aspyn and Lain McCanless took advantage of the snow to make one of their favorite treats - snow ice cream. To make it, mix snow with milk, sugar and vanilla until it’s the desired consistency.

Ozark County got its first brush of snow for the winter season Sunday. Residents awoke to gray skies and precipitation that slowly changed from rain to sleet to big, fluffy, wet snowflakes by mid-afternoon. Most areas in Ozark County had at least enough snow to cover the ground, with more accumulation on the west side of Ozark County.

Youngsters – and those young at heart – took advantage of the wintry weather to do as many snowy activities as possible before it melted away Monday afternoon.

Thornfield and Mark Twain school districts closed due to the wintry weather, and Lutie and Bakersfield school districts, which operate on a four-day school week with regularly scheduled Monday closures, did not hold classes. Gainesville and Dora school districts, where most roadways were clear Monday morning, had a regular school day on  Monday.

At press time, weather forecasters were calling for another round of flurries in the area late Tuesday night, but they said it was unlikely that Ozark County would see any accumulation.
