Woman reportedly walks into sheriff’s office, crying and talking to herself; officers find meth in her pocket

Amber Davis, 34, of Isabella, was arraigned on a charge of possession of methamphetamine before Associate Judge Raymond Gross Monday. Public defender Lauren Kate Welborn entered her appearance in the case as Davis’s attorney. A bond reduction hearing is set for Jan. 12. She is currently being held in the Ozark County Jail on a $1,500 cash only bond. If convicted of the class D felony, she could face up to 4 years in prison.

Allegations

According to the probable cause statement in the case, prepared by Ozark County deputy Kyle Hannaford, a woman entered the Ozark County Sheriff’s Department lobby around 10 p.m. Nov. 29. She was wearing a hood and was pacing the lobby, talking to herself, the report says. Hannaford and deputy Jeffrey Lane went into the lobby and asked the woman to remove her hood, so they could see who she was. The officers recognized her as Davis. “[She] kept repeating that she couldn’t forget the smell of herself as a dead person…” the report says. Hannaford also wrote that Davis was crying while she talked with officers. Lane stayed with Davis, and Hannaford reportedly went to the dispatch window to inquire about Davis’s information. The dispatcher told Hannaford that Davis had an active warrant in a case for a probation violation. Hannaford asked Lane to take the woman to the booking area of the jail, where she’d be booked for the arrest warrant. Hannaford secured the two officers’ firearms, and Lane asked Davis to empty her pockets. The officer reportedly watched Davis pull a small, plastic bag out of her right front jacket pocket with what appeared to be a bottle cap and a white crystal substance. The contents of the bag field-tested positive for methamphetamine at the jail. It was secured and placed into the evidence room.
