Charles Lee Whisnant, 76

Charles Lee Whisnant, 76, of Gainesville, died Sept. 11, 2020, at Gainesville Health Care Center in Gainesville with his family by his side.

He was born Aug. 18, 1944, in a log cabin in Gainesville, the son of Everett and Flora Cockrum Whisnant. On Sept. 29, 1962, he married Patsy Norton.

Mr. Whisnant spent most of his life driving a truck or turning wrenches (with an occasional outburst of duct tape). He retired on Sept. 14, 2007, from MLH & Sons, where he enjoyed working with people who made his job enjoyable. He always said it was the best job he ever had.

He was a loving family man who lived for his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to poke fun and play jokes. His family says he could fix anything with a roll of duct tape or a 2” x 4”.

Although he was a man of immense humor, he instilled great morals in his family. It was well-known that the Whisnants’ door was always open, and anyone who entered soon felt like family.

Mr. Whisnant was a man of faith and a member of The Fountain Church. In his later years, he looked forward to attending church. He was greatly loved and will be missed by many.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patsy; three sons, Darren Whisnant and wife Dawn, Marty Whisnant and wife Joni, Jeff Whisnant and wife Karen; grandchildren Tiffany, Dusten, Monica, Thomas, Samantha, Chelsi, Haley, Eric, Chase, Shelby, Sadie, Timmy, Jon and Tori; great-grandchildren Collin, Jaidan, Mason, Bentley, Adyn, Jayley, Carson, Marvin, Tobias, Serenity, Skyla, Katrina and soon-to-arrive baby Shane; three brothers-in-law, Burl and wife Dawn Marie, Rick and wife Jill, Danny and wife Rebecca; two sisters-in-laws, Sue Skaggs and Linda Whisnant; two special friends, Tim Reiners and George Szabo, who were always available to sit with him or take him places after he could no longer drive; and a host of friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his son, Tim; his parents; his in-laws Marvin and Lillian Norton; five brothers: Everett Jr., Cecil, Cleo, Leo and James; one sister, Elva; one granddaughter, Christina; and one great-granddaughter, Rhythm Lea.
