Elvis Spencer Barrett, 86

Elvis Spencer Barrett, 86, of Gainesville, died Aug. 12, 2020, at the Gainesville Health Care Center. 

He was born Jan. 12, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Claudius Spencer and Winnie Viola Foiles Barrett. 

On Sept. 23, 1956, in Cook County, Illinois, he married Lee Moore. 

Mr. Barrett was a schoolteacher for many years. He taught in Kansas City and Mountain Grove but spent most of his years teaching at Gainesville High School. He loved teaching.   

He also enjoyed canoeing, biking, reading and spending time outdoors. 

Survivors include his two sons and their wives, Jeff Barrett and wife Christy of Georgetown, Texas, and Pat Barrett and wife Shannon of Rochester, Minnesota; two grandsons, Alex Barrett and wife Molly, and Jake Barrett and girlfriend Riku; and a host of other relatives and friends.  

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lee, the love of his life; his parents; three sisters, Gwendolyn Sproat, Claudine Cox and Alta Bestler; and one brother, Patrick Barrett. 

During his life, he climbed Horton Peak in the Sawtooth Wilderness of Idaho but never made it to the top. In September, his son and grandsons plan to climb to the top of Horton Peak and scatter Mr. Barrett’s ashes there.
