Robert ‘Bob’ Lowell Young, 79

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Lowell Young, 79, of Gainesville, were held Jan. 23, 2021, with Halbert Smith officiating. Mr. Young died Jan. 19 at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Arkansas, with his wife, Kay, and his girls by his side.

He was born April 25, 1941, in Brixey, the son of Vilas “Skinny” and Evelyn Stout Young. He worked for many years in St. Louis as a carpet layer and airplane mechanic. Later he left the big city and came home to Brixey and worked for Rockbridge Rainbow Trout Ranch.

On Aug. 11, 1979, he married Kay Rackley, creating a blended family of Mr. Young’s son Joe and Kay’s three young girls. After their marriage, Mr. Young started working for Town & Country Supermarket and continued there until his health forced him to retire almost 30 years later.

He was baptized into Christ at an early age and was a longtime member of the Gainesville Church of Christ.

Mr. Young was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. He enjoyed going to games at Busch Stadium, listening to games on the radio and keeping the stats in his own journals back home. He also loved following around his grandkids, nieces and nephews to all of their sporting events. In the off season, he spent many hours putting together jigsaw puzzles.

He and Kay enjoyed taking scenic drives, especially through Caney Mountain Conservation Area, looking for wildlife.

He is survived by his wife, Kay, of the home; his son, Joe Young of Conway, Arkansas; daughters Melinda Abraham and husband John, and Hope Hillhouse and husband Corey, all of Gainesville, and Angie Calvert and husband Brian of Harrison, Arkansas; grandchildren USAF SSgt. Gage Calvert, currently deployed overseas, and his wife Christi of Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Alyssa Eller and husband Andrew of North Little Rock, Arkansas, Rebecca Gosdin and husband Cayce, Lauren Hillhouse, Logan Hillhouse and Dylan Abraham, all of Gainesville, and Grant Calvert of Harrison; great-grandchildren Scarlett Calvert and Clark Calvert of Tinker Air Force Base; sisters-in-law Barbara Luna and husband Don, Patty Donley and husband Rex, Peggy Johnson and husband Doyle, all of Gainesville, and brother-in-law Steve Rackley and wife Jenny of Nixa; nieces Kathy Eudaly and husband Phil, Tena Duncan and husband Mike, Nancy Davis and husband Jeff, and Suzanne Ott and husband Rick.
