Sue Garner Hall, 79

Sue Garner Hall, 79

Sue Garner Hall, 79, of West Plains, died Aug. 8, 2020, in West Plains. Due to the current pandemic, the memorial service will be held at a later date.

She was born Dec. 21, 1940, in Calico Rock, Arkansas, the daughter of Noel and Bernice King Garner.

At an early age, she moved with her parents to West Plains, where she lived the rest of her life except for a short time in Fort Ord, California, while her husband served there in the Army.

During her childhood, she spent several happy summers with her first cousin, Sandra McVey (Strong), visiting their relatives in Calico Rock. She grew up with a father and three younger brothers who were intensely interested in athletics. She often said that, growing up, she could never walk down the hall to her bedroom without navigating her brothers’ basketball defense moves.

She graduated from West Plains High School in 1958, and on Aug. 27, 1960, at the First Baptist Church in West Plains, she married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Hall.

They lived in Fort Ord, California, during his Army service and then came back home to West Plains, where Mrs. Hall joined her mother-in-law, Gladys Hall, in operating the Anderson-Carte dress shop on the square. Later, she joined her husband as an active partner and Realtor in their Century 21 Ozark Hills real estate office.

Like her three brothers, Mrs. Hall was athletic. She was an avid tennis player, and she loved to amaze her son with her ability to water ski and glide to shore without getting her hair wet. Her husband had played basketball for four years while attending what is now Missouri State University, and the Halls were enthusiastic MSU-WP Grizzly Boosters.

Her family was her priority. After her mother died, she became a mainstay for her father. She was a devoted “GiGi” to her grandsons and also an excellent cook, especially known for her custard pies and lasagna. She loved early morning walks with her longtime friend, Kay Garrett.

She was a longtime and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of West Plains.

She met the devastating diagnosis of Lewy body dementia with grace and stoicism, always kind, appreciative and non-demanding of her caretakers. Her husband, Jerry, was constantly attentive and helped feed and care for her every day at the Greenhouse at West Vue until the covid-19 pandemic halted his frequent visits.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry, of West Plains; her sons David Garner Hall, owner of Ozark Hills Insurance Agency in Gainesville, and his wife Dana of West Plains, and Daniel Lee Hall and partner Eyal Haim of San Francisco; grandsons Samuel and Andrew Hall; her brothers Gary Garner and wife Barbara of South Dakota, and Roger Garner and wife Cathy of Springfield; her cousin Sandra Strong of Gainesville and the rest of her King cousins; and many friends in the West Plains and Ozark County area.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jerry Garner, a pharmacist who had worked in the Theodosia and Court Square pharmacies.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, the Garnett Library at MSU-WP or the Jerry and Sue Hall Grizzly Endowed Scholarship at MSU, and may be left at or mailed to Robertson-Drago Funeral Home, 211 W.
