Doin Arch ‘Mac’ Mackey

A celebration of the life of Doin Arch “Mac” Mackey, 95, of Overland Park, Kansas, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, at the Overland Park Christian Church, 7600 W. 75th St. in Overland Park. Mr. Mackey died Dec. 20, 2017, in Overland Park.

He was born May 1, 1922, in Ozark County, the sixth of the seventh children of Arch and Minnie Parker Mackey. He grew up on the family farm during the Depression. As a country boy, he developed his love of hiking in the woods and hunting, activities he enjoyed throughout his life. After graduating high school, he traveled west following the harvest to look for any work available. He ended up in Los Angeles, California, working a variety of jobs. As America entered into World War II, he enlisted in the Navy, becoming a medic primarily serving at a Marine base on Enewetak on Engebi Island in the Pacific.

When his enlistment was up, he re-enlisted and found himself on a ship headed for the coast of Japan to be part of the initial forces to create a D-Day type of invasion in the Asian theater. Halfway to their landing, their orders were changed due to President Truman giving the order to drop atomic bombs and ending the war.

After his discharge, Mr. Mackey went back to the family farm for a couple of years, but paying jobs were scarce. He eventually ended up in Kansas City, where he attended barber college. He worked for a couple of shops, and then, in the mid-1960s he opened his own shop – Mackey Barber Shop on the Plaza above the Embassy movie theater.

In the early 1980s he closed his shop and moved to Trailwood Hair Care in Overland Park. He cut hair for more than 50 years and thoroughly enjoyed the relationships he had with his customers.

After living in Kansas City for a few years, he met and married Roberta Campain, who became his wife of 28 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Jane Fletcher and husband Tom; grandchildren Christina Clements and husband Jonathan, Jenny Fletcher McKerrow and husband Jeff, and Tom Fletcher; four great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law, Anne Mackey and Ruth Campain; brother-in-law, Robert Campain and wife Charme; his cousins, Carl Mackey and wife Vera, and J.P.
