Leon Leroy Lane, 82

Funeral services for Leon Leroy Lane, 82, of Squires, were held May 29, 2018, at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home in Ava with Pastor Junior Hall officiating. Mr. Lane died May 24 at Cox South Hospital in Springfield with his family around him.
 He was born Aug. 20, 1935, in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Calbert V. and Minnie Beary Lane. He was an Army Veteran who served during the Korean War.
On Sept. 2, 1956, in Squires he married Ethil Leona Fleetwood. He was a retired foreman who worked for Howard Construction Co. for more than 30 years.
Mr. Lane was a Christian; he and his wife attended the Murray Church. He was also a member of Ava VFW Post #5993 and served as a Squires volunteer firefighter from 1982 to 1995. At Spurlock’s Store, he was lovingly known as the mayor of Squires. He enjoyed farming, gardening (he had a special skill for growing tomatoes), playing a good game of pitch and telling stories. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Ethil; his son, Marvin Lane; three grandchildren, Nina Lane, Kellie Lane and Alvin Brown; four great-grandchildren, Anthony, Riley, Alexis and Wyatt; two sisters, Wanda Ray and husband Glen, and Barbara Helms and husband Bill; one brother, Charles Lane; nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.  
 He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Alvin, who died in 2017; and five brothers, James, Gene, Bill, John and Harold.
Burial with full military honors rendered by the Troy Herd American Legion Post 112 will be in the Murray Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Murray Cemetery.
