Gainesville Bulldogs open season with win over Bakersfield Lions
The Gainesville Bulldogs opened their season with a 65-44 road win over the Bakersfield Lions.
“I thought we played pretty well. We just struggled to put the ball in the basket,” said coach Matt Powell. The team was 35 percent from the field for the game, but made it up by hitting the offensive boards hard, racking up a total of 16 offensive rebounds.
Brodie Chapman led the scoring with 16 points. Chapman also charted 5 assists, 5 steals and 4 rebounds.
Garrett Morgan sank a pair of three-pointers at the start of the second half to expand the Bulldogs’ lead. Morgan scored 15 points for the Bulldogs, pulled down 5 rebounds and had 3 steals and 2 assists for the game.
Brandon Poe added 11 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assists, while John Hossman scored 10 points, had 1 assist, and led the team in rebounds with 7.
Jaxon Britt scored 6 points and pulled down 6 rebounds. Wyatt Wilson added 4 points, 4 rebounds and had 1 assist. Justin Wallace chipped in 3 poitns and had 5 rebounds.
Gainesville JV won their game, 41-9, and the GHS C team also won, 12-11.
“Anytime you can go on the road and win, it’s a good win,” Powell said.
The Gainesville boys and girls teams host Koshkonong Thursday with games beginning at 5 p.m.
The Bakersfield boys are competing in the River Country Classic Basketball Tournament in Thayer this week. The Lady Lions are competing in the Fordland Invitational Tournament.
