Gainesville Bulldogs defeat Norwood, Alton last week

The Gainesville Bulldogs baseball team added a loss and two wins to their record last week, bringing it to 3-5 for the season so far.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Bulldogs hosted a tough Seymour team. After the game, despite a 5-1 loss to the Tigers, coach Nathan Jones said it was the best the team had played all year.  “We competed well against a very good team that is very well coached,” Jones said. “Every aspect of the game tonight – hitting, pitching and defense – came together for us to have a chance to be in the ball game. We’re going to continue taking steps in the right direction as a team to keep playing as well as we did tonight.”

Standout performances by Gainesville players included Will Uchtman who was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Ben Pointer, who pitched five innings with zero earned runs and 5 strike-outs and was 1 for 3 at the plate with a double.

Thursday, Sept. 13, the Bulldogs traveled to Norwood and won 7-6. “We competed the entire game,” Jones said. The Bulldogs and Pirates traded leads several times throughout the game. Gainesville was down 6-4 going into the seventh inning then scored 3 runs to win 7-6.

Ben Pointer pitched four innings with 6 strikeouts. Jaxon Britt was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs; Jake Leeker was 1 for 2 with 2 walks and 2 RBIs. Pointer, Cody Donley and Landry Jenkins all had a hit and an RBI as well.

Gainesville was back on the road the following night, traveling to Alton, where they earned a 14-11 win. “This was a game that we had early control over and then kind of let slip away a little bit,” Jones said. “We hit the ball well all night though and gave ourselves multiple chances to score runs. Our bats did a great job of pulling this game out for our pitching tonight. ... I was glad to see we picked each other up and got the win.”

Tuesday, the team traveled to Bradleyville. Results of that game were unavailable at press time.

The Bulldogs will host Conway, Monday, Sept, 24.
