The Bakersfield Head Start class began Dec. 4 with 15 3-year-olds and a few 4-year-olds who are dually enrolled in Bakersfield’s afternoon preschool program. The class is Ozark County’s second Head Start program. The other one is in Gainesville.

Dora K-12 school counselor Amelia Menz became interested in acquiring a Certified Assistance Dog while attending the Missouri School Counselor Association’s annual conference in 2014. She set about applying for a program operated by CARES, Inc., in which inmates in correctional facilities help with basic training. Twenty-seven months after she applied for a dog, Menz was paired with Holly and spent a week training with her in Kansas. Now, she says, Holly has a had “tremendous” success working with students at Dora.
When Dora K-12 school counselor Amelia Menz was working in another district back in 2014, she attended the Missouri School Counselor Association’s annual conference, where break-out sessions offered information about animal-assisted therapy. Those sessions “got the wheels turning,” she said...

Barney and Doris Douglas - The family of the late Barney and Doris Douglas donated 69 books to Gainesville third grade and preschool students last week. Each book included the stamp, pictured below, on the inside cover. Both Doris and Barney Douglas spent their lives giving back to Ozark County. Doris, who died June 6, 2014, dedicated many years as a volunteer at the Ozark County Volunteer Library. Barney, who died Dec. 22, 2012, was active with the Robert Burns Masonic Lodge #496, volunteered with the American Red Cross bloodmobile, Lions Club, Hootin an Hollarin, and the ball game concession stand. He also served on the Ozark County Health Department board and Gainesville school board.
