Bakersfield – Uncle John Wiles has returned from Camp Funston where he had been visiting his son Virgil, who has departed for France.
Liner – Henry Culpepper, who was seriously hurt in battle with a “sub” several weeks ago, came home last week. It is interesting to hear him tell of his experience. He is improving nicely. He is going back to the Navy if his hearing is restored.
D. T. Webb, North Fork’s noted fisherman, caught over 100 fine fish last week.

There were singers from all part of the county and from adjoining counties. Loud speakers were installed so that the crowd, which overflowed the high school gymnasium, might be able to enjoy the great song fest.

Frank Grisham, proprietor of the Central Hotel of this city, was operated on Friday morning at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield for a cataract on his eye. He is getting along as well as could be expected. His daughter, Miss Fern, went to Springfield Sunday morning to spend Sunday and Monday with him.
Raymond Luna, who is in a U.S. training camp in Mississippi, was here visiting home folks on a 10-day furlough but after four days here, he received notice to return to camp at once.
Noble – The wedding bells ran here Friday when Gladys Deathrage became the bride of Teddy Bowdin. Mr. Bowdin is serving in the Navy, stationed at Puerto Rica.

Pvt. Larry Warrick is stationed just out of Hue in Vietnam with an Army corps engaged in guarding supplies, bridges and policing villages.
Dawt – You should see Elmer Hamilton go up and down the rows of his garden with his “iron mule” (a roto-tiller). Best of all, he doesn’t have to feed this mule during the winter.
Lilly Ridge – Mr. and Mrs. Odea Beasley visited Mr. and Mrs. James Beasley and sons one night. While the ladies milked the cows, Odea and James planted corn till 11 o’clock that night.
Charity – Jess Shaw was mowing hay for D. P. Herd, and a copperhead snake hit his pants leg but was cut later with a mower. ...
A large copperhead was crawling under Mike Poe’s feet, and he jumped away. Vanita Davenport almost stepped on a rattler at their pasture.
There seems to be a lot of snakes, especially in hay fields and around ponds.
