Ava lawyer, former prosecutor disbarred by Supreme Court

The Missouri Supreme Court has disbarred a Douglas County attorney and former county prosecutor for violating the state's rules of professional conduct for lawyers.
Carl Smith, a longtime attorney in Ava who also served as Douglas County Prosecutor from 1994 to 1998, was disbarred Tuesday by the Supreme Court and ordered to pay $2,000 plus related costs.
The Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel urged the Supreme Court to disbar Smith for a number of written accusations Smith made against attorneys in the 44th Judicial Circuit that he included in court filings, waivers and press releases dating back to 2006.
According to Missouri Lawyers Media, Smith had accused a prosecutor and a judge of using a grand jury to cover up judicial misconduct, a prosecutor handing a judge a bag of money on a fishing boat and a prosecutor of conducting a sexual relationship with his adopted daughter, among other things.
The order from the high court stated that "Carl Elvin Smith is hereby disbarred and that his right and license to practice law in the State of Missouri is canceled and that his name be stricken from the roll of attorneys in this State."
