The Bakersfield Lady Lions softball team, coached by Cainen McGinnis, started off their season with a 5-2 win over Gainesville and a 23-7 win over Dora.
Miley Edens, a junior starting pitcher for the Lady Lions, pitched a total of 86 pitches against Gainesville with 61 strikes and eight strikeouts in the win on Tuesday, March 25 at the Gainesville ballfield.
The Lady Lions also had a good offensive streak going, with junior Paige Crites leading the way, going 4 for 4 at the plate.
Edens was also the starting pitcher when the Lady Lions traveled to Dora on Tuesday, March 27, where she pitched a total of 107 pitches with nine strikeouts. Freshman Rosabelle Rogers drove in four runs on six hits, including a home run in the third inning.
“We will depend on her leadership through much of this softball season,” said Coach Cainen McGinnis. “The fun part about this group is each game there will be somebody different stepping up and making plays and leading us. We have a very young, but yet very experienced group who will be a lot of fun to coach this spring.”
The Lady Lions suffered their first loss of the season when they traveled to Couch and lost 7-6.
Bakersfield, who is having to travel for all their games due to tornado damage to their home fields, heads to Fordland (2-0) Thursday, April 3 and Thayer (4-1) Friday, April 4.
