The Bakersfield Junior High Lady Lions basketball team took second place behind Fairview in the Dora Dominoes Tournament last week.
On Oct. 17, in the opening round of tournament play, the Lions beat Richards School 43-10. Aubrey Luna led the team with 13, Carrleigh Green 6, Kelsey Cotter 6, Eden Cotter 6, Bristol Robinson 6, Alyssa Gailey 4 and Abigail Yarber 2.
In the semifinal game Oct. 20, they escaped Koshkonong 22-17 in a barn-burner.
The Lady Lions lost to Fairview 41-31 in the championship game Saturday.
“[Fairview] is a really good team that is well coached,” said Bakersfield JH girls coach Micheal Mahan. “It was 8-6 Fairview at the end of the first quarter. We fought hard but found ourselves down 21-16 at the half. Fairview came out strong in the third quarter and built on their lead, wrapping up the third quarter with a 32-19 lead. We fought really hard in the fourth quarter to cut into the lead, and we out scored them 12-9 in the last quarter but fell 41-31 to an undefeated Fairview Flyers team. We definitely had our chances, but the girls hustled and worked their tail ends off from the tip off until the final buzzer rang. I’m proud of them.”
In the championship game, the team was led by Aubrey Luna 14, followed by Carrleigh Green 5, Bristol Robinson 4, Alyssa Gailey 3, Eden Cotter 3 and Kelsey Cotter 2. Aubrey Luna and Carrleigh Green made all tournament. Shaniah Foster won first place in the 3-point shooting contest at the tournament.
The team continues play with a season record of 11-1 and a record of 23-4 since summer ball began in June.
