Cemetery Memorial Day decoration, clean up and work days
<p class="p1"><strong>Griffith Cemetery</strong></p><p class="p2">Decoration services at Griffith Cemetery will be held on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14. A brief business meeting will be held at 11 a.m.</p><p class="p1"> </p><p class="p1"><strong>Isabella Cemetery</strong></p><p class="p2">Isabella Cemetery will hold its annual Decoration Day observance on Sunday, May 14.</p><p class="p2">Donations to help with the cemetery upkeep can be deposited in the box at the cemetery or mailed to Halbert Smith, P.O. Box 206, Gainesville, MO 65655.</p><p class="p2"> </p><p class="p1"><strong>Longrun Cemetery</strong></p><p class="p2">The annual decoration for the Longrun Cemetery will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, May 21. A brief business meeting will be held, followed by decoration and a basket lunch.</p><p class="p2"> </p><p class="p1"><strong>Lutie Cemetery</strong></p><p class="p2">Lutie Cemetery will hold its Memorial Day decoration on May 29. A business meeting will be held at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon at noon.</p><p class="p2"> </p><p class="p1"><strong>Price Place Cemetery</strong></p><p class="p2">Price Place Cemetery will have a cleanup / workday beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 13.</p><p class="p2">Decoration will be Sunday, May 21, with the annual meeting of the members of the corporation, including election of officers and board members, beginning at 1:30 p.m.</p><p class="p2">Donations for cemetery upkeep may be mailed to Price Place Cemetery, P.O. Box 99, Pontiac, MO 65729.</p><p class="p2"> </p><p class="p1"><strong>Sallee Cemetery</strong></p><p class="p2">The annual Sallee Cemetery cleanup and meeting will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13. Cemetery upkeep donations may be dropped off at First Home Bank or mailed to Jennifer James, 1463 County Road 340, Caulfield, MO 65626. </p><p class="p2"> </p><p class="p1"><strong>Souder Cemetery</strong></p><p class="p2">Decoration Day services are planned for Sunday, May 28, including a basket dinner after the church service led by E. J. Hampton, who has ministered at the Souder Church of Christ for more than 50 years. At press time Tuesday, access to the cemetery was only possible via County Road 138 from Highway 95 on the east side of the Souder bridge, which has been closed since the floods due to washed-out pavement. Access from Highway 95 through Almartha had not been restored. Cemetery donations may be mailed to 296 County Road 134, Wasola, MO 65773, or to Walker at P.O. Box 673, Ava, MO 65608. </p><p class="p2"> </p><p class="p1"><strong>Thornfield Cemetery </strong></p><p class="p2">Thornfield Cemetery will hold its Memorial Day decoration on May 28 with Brother Jimmy Kyle preaching at the 11 a.m. service and a short business meeting following. Those attending the Memorial Day observance will need to travel Highway 95 from Wasola to get to the cemetery because of the JJ Highway bridge outage. </p>
<p class="p1">Last week’s heavy rains caused Spring Creek, on the north side of Ozark County, to overflow its banks with a ferocious current that caused extensive damage in several places, including the century-old Souder Cemetery. Area native Donna Walker, 89, now living in Ava, said the water “overflowed into the cemetery with such force it left many headstones lying flat on the ground.” The fence surrounding the cemetery was washed out in many spots, and the lane leading to the cemetery was blocked by debris. The damage has since been repaired by volunteers, and Decoration Day services are planned for Sunday, May 28, including a basket dinner after the church service led by E. J.
