City wants to clean out Lick Creek

Gainesville Mayor Don Luna has applied for a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that would allow the city to clean out Lick Creek from the ballfields to the city lagoon.
Luna informed city aldermen at Monday's regular monthly meeting that he would like to have the creek cleaned out to prevent bank erosion, particularly near the ballpark and around the city lagoon.
The mayor said the idea was to remove some of the willow trees in the creek and move gravel from the center of the stream-bed to the banks to stop erosion and prevent flooding.
Luna said he was also looking into funding that would pay for the project, and he was eyeing groups that would help with the task.
