Convicted felon arrested after officer finds guns at home

Theodosia resident Brandon Cowan, 37, posted a $3,000 cash bond and was released from the Ozark County Jail on May 26 in a case in which he’s charged with three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a dangerous felon.

According to the probable cause statement filed by Ozark County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Rhoades, the officer was conducting a uniformed patrol at 11 p.m. April 23 when he obtained a search warrant at 216 Auntie Lane in Theodosia after the officer received a tip that Cowan was residing at the residence and was in possession of firearms, an illegal act considering he is a convicted felon.

Rhoades conducted a background check on Cowan and found that he’d been convicted in 2019 of armed criminal action, a class C felony, in Wabash, Indiana, in 2019. He is currently on felony probation and is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

The officer executed the search warrant six days later on April 29.

“I located three shotguns and multiple boxes of various calibers of ammunition. I seized them and located the owner Brandon Cowan a short distance away, driving his vehicle,” Rhoades wrote in his report. “I conducted a stop of his vehicle and arrested him for… felon in possession of a firearm. He was transported to the Ozark County Jail, where he was booked.”

Cowan is scheduled to return to court to face the charges at 9 a.m. June 8.
