Man found at botched ATM theft cleared of involvement

Charles Bergman

What began as an investigation into the recent attempted ATM theft in Gainesville ended with an unexpected arrest for an unrelated suspect.

According to the Ozark County Sheriff’s Department, deputies who responded to the March 26 attempted ATM theft at Stockmens Bank in Gainesville encountered Charles Bergman at the scene. Bergman reportedly refused to provide officers with his real name or proper identification while deputies worked to determine whether he was connected to the attempted theft. He was detained as officers worked to piece together who he was and what he was doing at that location that morning.

They were able to confirm Bergman’s identity and discovered he had two active felony warrants, one out of Arkansas and another from Illinois. He was subsequently arrested and booked into jail on those warrants.

They later determined that he was not involved in the attempted ATM theft. “Talk about wrong place, wrong time...” a post to the Ozark County Sheriff’s Facebook page said about the incident.
