Gainesville roper brings home honors from Oklahoma rodeo
Trey Crawford of Gainesville and Wyatt Miller of Pleasant Hill came home with several honors after competing recently in the College Recruiting Rodeo at Northeast Oklahoma State University in Miami, Okla.
Competing against 71 other high school-age teams from Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Kansas, Crawford and Miller won second place in the High School Incentive, second place in the Short-go for High School, third place in the Short-go Overall and third place in the Average Overall.
High school students also competed overall with current NEO students, NEO alumni and even some pro-rodeo contestants. All were competing for cash; high school juniors and seniors were also competing for NEO scholarships and tuition fees.
Crawford and Miller's team was the only all-freshman team that participated in the rodeo, and they came away with high praise from the NEO rodeo coach.
Crawford's mother, Jerri Sue Crawford, said the coach asked both boys' dads how old they were. When they told him Trey and Wyatt were 14, his response was, "Wow! I want them here in four years," Jerri Sue said.
"It was a great experience for them to get to compete against some of the really, really good ropers like Coleman Proctor, who won the George Strait Invitational Roping last year," said Jerri Sue. "I think it made it even sweeter because of where they ended up placing, and they were only freshmen. They were some pretty happy boys, and they won a nice paycheck too!"
