The Gainesville Bulldogs hosted Cabool in their season opening game on Friday, March 21, and both the JV and varsity chalked up wins that evening.
The varsity team defeated Cabool 16-1 in three innings. The Bulldogs had 12 hits, putting up 10 of those in the second inning with two outs on the board. “They did a great job,” said GHS Coach Blake Hobbs.
Three GHS players were perfect offensively, Hobbs said. Brayden Miller went 3-3 at the plate with four RBIs and a double. Hunter Luna was also 3-3 with three RBIs and two doubles. Cutter Morrison was 2-2 at the plate with two RBIs and a double.
GHS senior Hunter Luna pitched the entire three-inning game and had six strikeouts against Cabool.
Gainesville School staff members, parents and community volunteers held a fish fry benefit dinner before and during the games to raise money to help neighboring Bakersfield School recover from the March 14 tornado that destroyed the school’s ballfields there. More than $2,500 was raised. The school posted a note of appreciation on their Facebook page, thanking supporters and Town and County manager Roger Frost for their help in making the fundraiser a success.
The Bulldogs traveled to Reeds Spring Tuesday, March 25. Results of that game were unavailable at presstime.
First Annual Gainesville Spring Baseball Tournament
The Gainesville Bulldogs and Coach Blake Hobbs are hosting their first spring baseball tournament Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29. Four teams are playing in what should be a very competitive tournament, Hobbs said.
The tournament kicks off at 4:30 p.m. Friday when Gainesville takes on Thayer. That game will be followed by the Ava Bears against the Bakersfield Lions.
Saturday’s games begin at 10 a.m. when Gainesville plays Ava. Ava will then take on Thayer at noon, followed by Thayer vs. Bakersfield at 2. And to end the tournament, Gainesville plays Bakersfield at 4 p.m.
Coach Hobbs invites everyone to come out and enjoy some great high school baseball.
