The Gainesville High School girls cross country team made school history Saturday, competing in the Class 2 State Championship Meet at Gans Creek Recreation Area in Columbia.
It marked the first time a Gainesville cross country team has ever qualified for the state meet, and the Lady Bulldogs made the most of their opportunity, finishing 13th overall against some of the top programs in Missouri.
Leading the way for Gainesville was sophomore Jessica Suit, who ran a remarkable race, crossing the finish line of the 3.1 mile run in 20:16 to claim 17th place and All-State honors.
“The team’s effort, grit and heart were on full display from start to finish,” said Head Coach Gary Emrick. “These girls gave everything they had out there today.”
The team’s success capped a season defined by hard work, unity, and determination Emrick said, adding that the girls’ commitment to one another set them apart. Members of the team who made the trip to state include sophomore Jessica Suit, seniors Kaitlyn Kahl, Faith Avila and Sarah Klessig, and freshmen Annabell Snelson, Isabelle Workman and Nina Sponaugle and alternate Jazlyn Wittkofski.
“We couldn’t be more proud of this group,” Emrick added. “Their commitment, teamwork, and faith in one another made this season something truly special. They’ve shown what it means to ‘run with endurance the race set before us.’”
In addition to the girls’ milestone performance, Archer Luna represented Gainesville in the boys’ race, putting forth a strong effort and showcasing the same dedication and pride that have fueled the Bulldogs’ rise in cross country.
Gainesville’s cross country program is coached by Emrick and David Murphy.
The historic trip to state marked a memorable end to Gainesville’s 2025 season, one filled with heart, perseverance, and a legacy that will inspire future runners for years to come.
