The Gainesville High School cross country teams, coached by Gary Emrick and David Murphy, turned in an impressive performance at the Class 2 District 2 meet held Saturday in El Dorado Springs — highlighted by a historic finish for the GHS girls.

For the first time in school history, a Gainesville cross country team has qualified for the state championships. The Lady Bulldogs captured third place in the district standings to punch their ticket to state and earned four individual medals in the process.

Sophomore Jessica Suit led the way with a standout run, finishing fourth overall in 21:07.54 to earn all-district honors and automatic state qualification. Kaitlyn Kahl, a senior, followed close behind with an 11th-place finish in 21:57.01, also earning a medal and state berth.

Rounding out Gainesville’s top finishers and qualifying individually for state were freshmen Isabelle Workman, who placed 28th with a personal-best time of 23:09.12, and Annabell Snelson, who clocked a new personal record of 23:24 to take 30th. Both earned all-district honors and contributed crucial points to the team’s historic third-place finish. Nina Sponaugle rounded out the team’s points, and teammates Sarah Klessig and Rachyl McGinnis also ran strong races.

On the boys’ side, junior Archer Luna represented Gainesville with a stellar performance of his own, earning a 14th-place finish in 18:04.43 to qualify for state as an individual and and earn all-district honors.

The Class 2 State Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia. The boys’ race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the girls’ race at 11:45 a.m. Digital spectator tickets must be purchased online at hometownticketing.com.

Coach Emrick praised the athletes’ determination and teamwork: “These runners have worked hard all season, and it’s incredible to see them make school history. We’re excited to see what they can do at state.”
