Hootin an Hollarin terrapin races are Friday and Saturday mornings

The annual Hootin an Hollarin Terrapin Races are a highlight for local kids. This free-to-enter event invites participants to bring their own terrapin or turtle to compete in the 10:30 a.m. races on Friday or Saturday—or both. Sign-up begins at 10 a.m. in front of Shelter Insurance. Most years, there are so many terrapins that multiple heats were needed each day to determine the winners.
Once the contestants are ready, each child places their terrapin in the center circle and lets it loose; the first to reach the outer circle wins. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places, and each day’s first-place winner will also receive a unique trophy crafted by Todd Freise.
Organizers ask that no paint or alterations be made to the turtles’ shells and that all turtles be returned to their original locations after the races to ensure the creature’s future survival.
