K9 Karo and OC deputies visit Dora fourth graders

The Dora fourth grade class, taught by Lacy Carroll, had some special visitors last week to kick off their animal shelter food drive, which is being held Sept. 23 through Oct. 4. Ozark County Sheriff’s deputies Josh Sherman, Jeff Lane, Jeremy McKee and K-9 Deputy Karo showed the students how Deputy Karo performs his role as part of the sheriff’s team. They described tasks that Karo performs and gave the students a demonstration of Karo’s bite skills on Deputy Lane, who wore a protective bite suit. The students watched as Karo tackled Deputy Lane to the ground and performed commands given by his handler. Sherman explained that the commands he gives Karo (which are given in Dutch) instruct the dog to track, bite or release suspects. Those who would like to donate food, toys or pet supplies for cats and dogs as part of the animal shelter food drive can drop them off at the Dora R-III School in support of the fourth-grade community service project.
