Ozark County Volunteer Library closure extended as concrete repairs continue

Concrete-repair work continues at the Ozark County Volunteer Library, causing the library to be closed longer than originally expected. Shown here, from left: Nick Schwenk, Jim Frye, Ken Krupp and Braden Frye. The work crew also included Davin Friend, not pictured.

The Ozark County Volunteer Library is currently closed as the concrete around the building is being repaired. The closure is not expected to affect the library’s summer reading program, which is scheduled for July.

The Ozark County Volunteer Library’s closure for concrete repairs will continue a little longer than expected due to the ongoing work, library board president Joanne Krupp said last week. The original closure was scheduled for May 20 through June 1, but the job has proven to be a little more complicated than expected.

The concrete at the base of the library’s steps was apparently damaged by a break in a metal, city-owned water-drainage line that runs under Second Street where it joins Elm Street, and then under the front of the library. Water from the broken line apparently seeped into the ground and weakened the concrete above the pipe, repair workers said.

Work crew member Davin Friend said they expect to pour concrete Wednesday, weather permitting, and it’s hoped the library can reopen soon. Patrons are encouraged to watch the Times and the Ozark County Volunteer Library Facebook page for updates.

These concrete repairs, like everything pertaining to the library, are funded by donations or by occasional grants from charitable organizations. A support group, Friends of the Library, supports the library through its $10 monthly dues. Contributions may be dropped off at the library, across from the Gainesville post office, or mailed to the library at P.O. Box 518, Gainesville, MO 65655. Gifts and Friends of the Library membership dues may also be made directly to the Ozark County Volunteer Library account at Century Bank of the Ozarks. For more information, contact the library at 417-679-4442 or OzarkCoVolLibrary@gmail.com.

The repair work is not expected to interfere with the library’s summer reading program, which will be held during July.
