The U.S. Geological Survey reported a small earthquake occurred in Gainesville at 8:46 a.m. last Saturday morning, May 31.
The report shows that the quake hit a few miles southwest of town, just behind the buildings of Chaney Monument Works and Kustom Auto Body off Highway 160.
The USGS rated the quake as a 2.24 magnitude, which is classified as a “micro” earthquake, which is generally not felt by people but is picked up on local instruments. There are approximately 100,000 micro earthquakes in the U.S. each year.
The USGS said that nobody from the public reported the earthquake at the time it released its data.
