Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield museum curator to speak during free program Feb. 9

Jeffrey Patrick, Museum curator at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield

Good news! We at the Historium are happy to announce that Jeffrey Patrick, museum curator at the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, will join us at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, for a presentation.

Patrick has worked at the battlefield since 1992 and is the author or editor of numerous books and articles on American 19th and 20th century military history. He is currently completing the final volume of a trilogy about the career of Colonel Ward Schrantz, a resident of Carthage who served in both world wars.

As a genealogy buff, I've found that most everyone who shares my interest in family history loves to discover details about an ancestor's military service. Jeff will share with us resources that are available and ways to discover facts. He will also talk about Wilson's Creek (a resource very close to us) and his work there. There will also be a time for questions.

We'd like to give Jeff Patrick a warm Ozark County welcome, so please join us for this free event, to which everyone is invited!

Patrick’s visit to the Historium on Feb. 9 is just the start of a string of neat events.

Also in store for your pleasure is a visit from Dr. Phil Howerton of MSU-West Plains, professor of English and published poet. Dr. Howerton has visited us before, and his visits are wonderful! He will be back at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 23, to give a mini writing workshop, with emphasis on writing about nature and regional subject matter. He will also read and discuss excerpts from his newest publication “Wild Muse: Ozarks Nature Poetry,” a compilation of works by nine Ozarks writers. I know it’s a while yet, but mark your calendar now so you can be sure to come. And stay tuned, because there is more to come.

The Historium is located on the west side of the square in downtown Gainesville and is easily accessible to all.
