Billy “Bill” Gene Ray, 93

 

Funeral services for Billy "Bill" Gene Ray, 93, of Springfield, were held Oct. 4, 2025, at Park Crest Baptist Church in Springfield. Burial was held Oct. 6 at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield. 

He died Oct. 1. Bill was born on Feb. 25, 1932, in the quaint town of Romance. His life was a testament to the values of hard work, family, and service. 

A proud graduate of Gainesville High School, Bill furthered his education by attending Southwest Missouri State University, demonstrating his commitment to lifelong learning and personal development. His professional journey was marked by dedication and excellence, having worked at Selmier Peerless Laundry and Boeing Company. After retirement, he delivered beauty supplies for State Beauty Supplies in Springfield. He also volunteered for the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks.

Billy served his country with honor in the United States Army and then the Army Reserves, continuing his service to fellow veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs. He was part of the Korean War. Later, Bill was a part of a funeral honor guard group, rendering military honors for those who proudly served their country.

Bill's faith played a central role in his life; as a devout Christian, he lived his beliefs through his actions and relationships. His involvement with the National Rifle Association and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers reflected his passion for his interests and his commitment to community.

An avid outdoorsman, Bill found solace and joy in fishing and hunting. These activities not only provided him with a sense of peace but also allowed him to cherish moments with family and friends.

He married Nadine (Griffin) Ray on Sept. 19, 1954. His life was enriched by the joy of raising two wonderful children, who gave him his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bill's love for his family was unparalleled; he was a man who built a foundation of love and integrity that supported and guided his loved ones.

Those who knew Bill would describe him as kind, loving and faith-filled. His presence brought comfort, and his actions spoke of a man deeply rooted in his values. Bill's legacy is not only in the lives he touched but also in the example he set - a life well-lived, marked by devotion to family, friends, his country and faith.

As his loved ones bid farewell to Bill, they celebrate a life that was truly a gift to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit, characterized by unwavering kindness and love, will continue to inspire and guide them. Bill will be profoundly missed, but the memories he created will forever be a source of comfort and strength to his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter Sheryl Ann Ray Huesing and her husband Alan; their children: Andrew, Jenna and Kyle; and great-grandchildren: Havana, Abraham, Allegra, Charlotte, and Daniel; his son Shaun Gene Ray and wife Laurie; and his daughter Britney Ray; his brothers: J.C. and Jackie Ray; and his sisters: Janice Dooley and Joyce Brixey.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents Leland and Lucy (Watson) Ray; his brother Ralph Ray; his grandparents Cornelius and Elizabeth Watson; and his nephew, Keith Dooley.
