Floyd Doyn Mallow, 84
Funeral services for Floyd Doyn Mallow, 84, of Owasso, Oklahoma, were held Dec. 4, 2021, at the Dewey, Oklahoma, Church of Christ with Robert Hamm and David Hammonds officiating. Mr. Mallow died Nov. 27 at his home in Owasso.
He was born Oct. 3, 1937, in Jefferson City, the son of David Floyd and Mayme Ellen Young Mallow. When he was 3 years old, the family moved to Brixey, where he grew up. He graduated from Gainesville High School in 1956. He often told the story of when he was a sophomore in high school and saw a girl with a beautiful smile sitting in the bleachers and had to find out who she was. He and that girl, Velma, were married Aug. 11, 1956. For 13 years, they lived in Kansas City, where Mr. Mallow was employed by Phillips Petroleum Co. When the company decided to send employees to its Bartlesville, Oklahoma, location in 1970, the Mallows moved to Dewey and happily raised their family there. Mr. Mallow retired from Phillips after 25 years of service. He was proud to have introduced automation to gasoline stations, allowing patrons to pay at the pump and not have to go into the store, a convenience that had not been previously available.
Later he worked in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a number of years as a consultant and national account manager.
He was a member of the Lighthouse Quartet, along with Robert Hamm, Joe Bushong and Dave Burns, and he enjoyed singing bass with his friends for many years. He had wonderful memories of those times, including traveling with his friends and their wives to many different places to sing gospel music and spread the message of the hope of Jesus.
Mr. Mallow was always up for a good laugh. One funny memory he liked to recall was when his fellow quartet member Dave Burns, who sang high tenor, would introduce him during their performances as “the little round mound of low-down sound” – to which Doyn would reply, ‘Well, thank you, sister Dave!”
After retirement, the Mallows enjoyed traveling and had lots of good times with family and friends, which always included sibling get-togethers, family reunions and annual high school reunions. He always spoke proudly of being from a small town in Ozark County in south Missouri.
He took excellent care of Velma, his wife of 59 years, until her death six years ago. Afterward, he filled his time by meeting with the senior group at church, friends from work, and his family for lunches and dinners. In the last year, he moved to Owasso to be closer to his family but was sad to leave behind his church family at the Adams Boulevard and the Dewey Church of Christ, whom the Mallows had shared life with and served with for so many years.
Mr. Mallow was very proud of all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed any time he was able to spend with them. His strength of character, his love of his family and friends and his ability to tell a funny story or joke will all be missed.
He is survived by his three children, daughters Teresa Brinkmeyer and husband Mike of Tulsa, and Jennifer McElroy of Collinsville, Oklahoma; his son David Mallow and wife Katie of Tonkawa, Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren, Dr. Bryce Murray and wife Dr Sunshine Murray, Dr. Brandon Murray and wife Dr. Naomi Murray, all of Tulsa, Brittany Cox and husband Trevor, and Layne Mallow, all of Edmond, Oklahoma, Dr. Brett Murray and wife Bethany of Owasso, Kyle Brinkmeyer and Cameron Brinkmeyer, both of Tulsa, Kimbree Malone of Tonkawa, and Amber Mendez and husband Zach, Mariah Mashburn and Zane McElroy, all of Collinsville; 20 great-grandchildren and many in-laws and special nieces and nephews and their families, along with many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma; sisters Launa Raye Mallow and Norma Mallow Smith; brother-in-law Ray Smith and many special in-laws who were like family.
