Gary Lynn Smith, 68

Gary Lynn Smith, 68 of Protem, died suddenly in the natural beauty of Mark Twain National Forest. A graveside service will be held when his family arrives from out of state. A family reunion and celebration of life will also be held at a later date in the summer/fall of 2024, and all of Gary's friends, family and acquaintances are invited.

Gary was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi, to Dawlton and Jean (Dowe) Smith and lived his early years in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a bachelor of arts and master’s degree in criminal justice. His career in law enforcement as a probation and parole officer spanned 37 years in the city of New Orleans.

He was a kind and gentle soul who claimed to be an introvert. In 2016, he relocated with his wife, Debra Schilling Smith, to her family’s home in Protem on Bull Shoals Lake.

Gary passionately loved the Lord Jesus Christ and was active in Rocky Ledge Baptist Church where he served as a trustee and Sunday school teacher and thrived living in Protem.

Gary is survived by his wife; stepson, Luke Mogg; sister, Kelli Walker and husband Bill; nephews: Bradley, Benjamen and Brandon Elmore; niece, Brooke Towery; and his beloved doxies, Fritz and Freddy.

His parents and sister, Tammy Smith, preceded him in death.
