Guavana Sims, 92

A graveside service for Guavana Lou Eslick Sims, 92, formerly of Gainesville and Mountain Home, Arkansas, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at Sims Cemetery north of Gainesville. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Roller Funeral Home on Highway 5 north of Mountain Home. Guavana passed away Jan. 10, 2025, in Midland, Texas, where she was living near her daughter.
She was born June 16, 1932, in Springfield to Vernie and Chloe Eslick and lived her growing-up years in Souder and Almartha. She graduated from Gainesville High School and married her forever love, John R. Sims, on Dec. 24, 1949.
Guavana and John R. lived in Gainesville and raised their four children while operating the Gainesville Locker Plant and later the MFA Insurance Agency. They moved to Mountain Home in 1970.
Guavana will be remembered for her welcoming hospitality, her unconditional love and care for her children and grandchildren, her servant’s heart and her devotion to her husband of almost 70 years.
She loved hosting parties and feeding guests in her home. She was a fun and loving grandmother, fondly remembered for her homemade cookies and well-stocked toy closet. She served her church in many ways, but most often was found in the church kitchen. When she had a spare moment for herself, she enjoyed painting, quilting, cooking and traveling.
The last few years of her life were affected by the encroachment of Alzheimer’s. As those who knew her expected, Guavana battled it with grit and determination. Along the journey she received love and support from her husband and family, and many loving friends, especially those at the Mountain Home Church of Christ and Legacy Ranch Memory Care and Angels Care Hospice in Midland.
Guavana lived her life as an example of devotion to God, unwavering love and support for her husband and unconditional love for her family. She will be missed, but her legacy will remain.
She is survived by her four children: Katherine Coffman and husband, Joe, of Midland, Texas; Rick Sims and wife, Sugar, of Englewood, Florida; Terry Sims and wife, Vickie, of Harrison, Arkansas; and Jeania Hood of Ozark. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John R., who died in 2019; her parents; her sister, Veta; her granddaughter Nikki Hood; and grandson Cody Hood.
Memorial contributions may be made to Legacy Ranch Memory Care, 4800 Briarwood Ave., Midland, TX 79707, or to the donor’s charity of choice.
