He died Sept. 6 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mount Vernon.
He was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Souder, the son of Leroy and Vesta Plaster. Lawrence’s journey through life was marked by a relentless commitment to excellence and service. Growing up during the Great Depression in Ozark County, he learned early on the values of hard work and perseverance.
On Aug. 16, 1941, he married his beloved wife, Wilma Wade. Their enduring bond, which lasted for 76 years, was a testament to their deep love and commitment to each other.
Lawrence’s courage was evident when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, serving honorably aboard the USS Manila Bay in the South Pacific during World War II. His bravery in combat against Japanese forces exemplified his unwavering resolve and dedication to his country.
After the war, Lawrence pursued higher education at Abilene Christian University in Texas, earning his degree in less than three years while also playing basketball for the Abilene Wildcats.
Settling in Ava, Lawrence and Wilma raised their children – Billye, Sherry, and Larry – while Lawrence established a diverse and successful career. Lawrence was a beacon of dedication and resilience. His life was a profound example of the wisdom found in Ecclesiastes 9:10, “Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might.”
His ventures included teaching and coaching at the Ava High School then on to owning a thriving Western Auto store for over 20 years, running a real estate and insurance office, and operating a construction company specializing in residential homes. He also served as the mayor of Ava, where his leadership and dedication were widely recognized and appreciated.
Lawrence’s impact extended beyond his professional achievements. As a devoted elder at his church and later as a resident of the Missouri Veterans Home, he continued to inspire those around him with his faith, wisdom, sense of humor and kindness.
Lawrence is survived by his loving children: Billye, Sherry and Larry; eight grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. His legacy of cherished memories, love and impact will continue to inspire all who knew him.
