Bulldogs take third at Mansfield tourney

The Gainesville High School Bulldogs basketball team took third place at the Mansfield tournament last week.

After defeating Houston 65-31 in the first round, the Bulldogs lost to first-seeded Mansfield 61-29, then went on to defeat Seymour 53-48 in the third place contest Saturday.

“Our goal for the week was to ‘go right’ and win two games. We did that,” said coach Matt Powell. “I was very pleased with the way the guys bounced back Saturday after a tough loss to Mansfield.  Seymour is a good team, and we knew it wouldn’t be easy.”

The Bulldogs were down 11 points with two minutes left in the second quarter but managed to get the deficit to just 4 points at the half.

“Brandon Poe hit a 3 on the first possession of the third quarter, and we scored the first 6 points of the half to take the lead,” said Powell.

Garrett Morgan led the scoring with 19, followed by Jaxon Britt with 14. Wyatt Wilson led in rebounds with 12. Brodie Chapman added 8 assists, 7 points and 5 steals. Brandon Poe scored 9 points and John Hossman added 4 points and had 5 steals.

The team will head to Memphis, Tennessee, on Friday, Dec. 15, where they will play Thayer at 1 p.m. in the FedEx Forum.

The Bulldogs’ record stands at 6-1.
