Sept. 13, 1912

Lutie – Edith Norton, the 17-year-old daughter of J. B. Norton of this place, committed suicide Thursday evening by drinking carbolic acid.

H. T. Owens, C. C. Hosman and E. F. Jones attended the colt show at Hammond Saturday. 

 

Sept. 24, 1915

Oak Dale – Mr. Holt of Ava has moved to the Williams farm at Hammond.

Estella Baker and Manda Hogan attended literary at Nottinghill Sat. night.

Lilly Ridge – Several are preparing to go to the [Baptist] Association.

Zanoni – W. J. Morrison and W. J. Young sold their cattle last week.

The Amyx boys were here a few days ago buying cattle.

W. J. Young has bought his brother’s share of the well drill.

 

Sept. 19, 1935

Ad – Horten Beauty Parlor opens Sat., Sept. 21. Latest Equipment, expert operator. Permanents $2.50, 3.50, 5.00, Wave sets .25 cents. Upstairs over Amyx Auto Co., Elcie Horten, proprietor.

On the 11th of Sept. relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Nelvis Luna to celebrate Uncle Pit Luna’s 86th birthday. The morning was spent singing songs and prayer was offered and also a short talk was made by Pete Howard.

At the noon hour, a long table was spread, loaded with good things to eat. In the center was a large white cake decorated with 86 candles. …

The afternoon was spent in visiting and singing. Uncle Pit declared he had no idea he would live so long. 

Many from Gainesville attended the Baptist Association at Wasola last week. It is reported the attendance Saturday was more than six thousand. The next association will be held at Brushy Knob, a few miles north of this city.

Brixey – Ivron Young and his girlfriend accompanied Vilas Young here Sunday to meet his intended wife of Washington, Mo., but on account of car trouble they failed to make connections.

Ocie – Jim Welch trucked four cows to Springfield; also took some rent wheat to R. J. Preston near Sparta.

Aunt France Tannehill had her garden sowed in turnips last week.

Mr. Howard is getting in a sawset on his place, to get lumber to build a new dwelling, chicken house, etc.

 

 Sept. 20, 1945

The Citizens Bank of Ava has purchased and taken over the Bank of Hammond, it was announced by J. W. Reese, President of Citizens Bank, Monday.

The Bank of Hammond was transferred to the Citizens Bank of Ava Saturday, Sept. 15, 1945.. . . The Bank of Hammond was organized in 1909 and has served Ozark and Taney County depositors since then. Cecil Mayberry has been cashier of the Bank of Hammond for the past four years. For twenty-five years prior to this, the bank was operated by members of the Hobbs family. 

 

Sept. 25, 1958

Dora – Mrs. Clyde Grisham is cook, and Mrs. Lanie Owens assistant. There are about 300 eating in the dining room.

There was baptizing at Hodgson Mill last Sunday. A revival has been going on at the Assembly of God Church with large crowds attending. They had 120 in Sunday school last Sunday. Bro. Handby is the pastor.

Lish Grisham is trying to get his silo filled. It rains so much that it’s hard to get much done.

 

Sept. 17, 1970

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lister have sold their drug store here to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Baker of Mountain Home, who will take over the business in approximately one month.

Lister Drug Store was opened here on Dec. 5, 1961, [date is probably wrong] in the store building now occupied by Jim’s TV and two years later it was moved to its present location on the east side of the square.

… Terry’s Dime Store, which the Listers opened here 10 years ago, will continue under the same operation.

Jerry James, who entered the linotype and offset printing school at the University of Missouri in Columbia Monday, has been awarded the Mearle Luna Memorial Scholarship for 1970.

James, who graduated in June, was named alternate for the scholarship, and it went to him when Kay Welch … did not enroll for additional schooling this fall.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon James, Jerry has been employed at the Ozark County Times during the past three years.
