Civil War soldier’s remains to be buried Oct. 17 in Springfield

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will conduct a committal service for an unknown Civil War soldier at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Springfield National Cemetery, 1702 E. Seminole St. in Springfield.
A VA news release said the National Park Service in 2011 “discovered the unearthed remains of an unknown Civil War soldier at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield.” Although an investigation was conducted, researchers “were unable to determine the individual’s identity.”
The park service “is confident, based on artifacts recovered with the remains and the grave’s orientation, that the remains are associated with the Civil War battle that took place at Wilson’s Creek on August 10, 1861,” the news release says. “NPS was not able to determine whether the remains were those of a Union or Confederate soldier.”
Veterans, Civil War reenactors and the general public are invited to attend the committal service, which will feature remarks by various officials and will include funeral honors. The service will begin at the cemetery rostrum and will continue to grave #286, section 1 south. For more information, call 417-881-9499.
