Bulldogs win two, lose two during Cabool Holiday Tournament

The Gainesville Bulldogs competed in the Cabool Tournament Dec. 26-30, where they won two games and lost two.

“It is always good to play all four days in that tournament.  We competed well each game,” said GHS Head Coach Morris Jenkins. “I feel like our defense has been solid, and our guys are willing to give good effort in guarding our opponents.  Offensively we have good options at several different spots, we just need to be more consistent and confident with offensive execution.”

The Bulldogs, who were seeded 12th in the tournament, took on fifth-seeded Eminence in the first round of the tournament on Thursday, Dec. 26 and lost by just one point, 48-47. Grant Leeker led the scoring with 20 points. Owen Donley scored 11 and Dawson Hewett was also in the double digits with 1-. Hunter Luna scored 4 and Avery Rodrigue added 2. Luna led in rebounds with 10, followed by Grant Leeker with 6 and Owen Donley pulled down 5.

The Bulldogs returned to Cabool  to take on Summerville Friday and won 53-45. Owen Donley led the scoring with 15 points, followed by Brayden Frye, Grant Leeker and Dawson Hewett with 8 points each. Avery Rodriguez added 6 and Hunter Luna chipped in 2 points. Luna and Leeker led in rebounds with 6 each, followed by Frye and Donley with 5 each. Hewett led in steals with 2.

On Saturday. Dec. 28, the Bulldogs added another win to their record when they defeated Winona 53-44. Dawson Hewett led the scoring with 18 points, followed by Owen Donley with 17. Grant Leeker and Hunter Luna added 7 points each, followed by Brayden Frye with 4. Donley and Luna led in steals with 2 each.

Monday, Dec. 30, the Bulldogs played the final round against 10th seeded Plato and lost a close contest 52-47.

Grant Leeker had a huge game, scoring 24 points for Gainesville. Others scoring for the Bulldogs were Owen Donley 8, Hunter Luna and Dawson Hewett with 4 each, Keaton Dabney with 3 and Brayden Frye and Kolby Anderson with 2 each.

The Bulldogs traveled to Bradleyville to take on the Eagles on Friday, Jan. 3 and won 71-30. The win brought the Bulldogs’ record to 5-5.

The Gainesville boys next three games are on the road. Monday, Jan. 6, the Bulldogs traveled to Cabool; Tuesday, they traveled to Thayer; and Friday, Jan. 10, the team goes to Dora to take on the Falcons.
