The Gainesville Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs turned in a strong performance at the Class 2 District 5 Track and Field Meet, battling through tough competition and pressure-packed events to earn several sectional berths.

Coach Gary Emrick praised his athletes for their effort and determination throughout the meet, which was held in Cuba on Saturday, May 9.

“Districts are never easy,” Emrick said. “The competition gets tougher, the pressure gets heavier, and every event matters a little more. But our athletes continued to battle, improve, and represent Gainesville the right way.”

The Bulldogs were led by Macray Hambelton, who captured the district championship in the javelin with a throw of 44.72 meters to qualify for the MSHSAA Class 2 Sectional Meet on Saturday, May 16, in Buffalo.

Gainesville’s boys 4x800-meter relay team also advanced with a third-place finish in 9:24.82. Team members included Zaiden Rodrigue, Cayden Emrick, Danny Mason and Archer Luna.

On the girls side, Jessica Suit delivered a standout performance by winning district titles in both the 1600-meter run and 3200-meter run. Suit clocked a 5:49.92 in the 1600 and a 13:08.84 in the 3200.

Annabell Snelson qualified in two individual events, taking second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:37.84 and third in the 400 meters in 1:07.34. Teammate Nina Sponaugle added a fourth-place sectional qualifying finish in the 400 meters with a time of 1:08.06.

The Lady Bulldogs also qualified both relay teams for sectionals. The 4x400 relay team of Kaitlyn Kahl, Suit, Sponaugle and Snelson placed third in 4:42.54. The same quartet earned another third-place finish in the 4x800 relay with a time of 11:09.98.

Emrick said the success extended beyond the athletes who qualified.

“Beyond the qualifiers, we also had a big day of improvement across the board,” he said. “Personal records were earned, athletes kept pushing, and the work they have been putting in all season continued to show up when it mattered.”

Coach Murphy added that the program’s focus remains consistent each week.

“That is what we ask for,” Murphy said. “Compete hard. Represent Gainesville well. Keep getting better. Be grateful for the opportunity. Be relentless. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Never give up.”

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs then turned their attention to the Class 2 Sectional Meet in Buffalo held on Saturday, May 16, where the top four finishers in each event advanced to the state championships. Qualifying athletes will be heading to the state meet in Jefferson City this Friday and Saturday. See the article on page A1 for details on sectionals and state.
